Liane Boyer

President and Chief Geoscientist, Broken Rock Resources Ltd.

Exploration and Discovery in Northwestern Ontario. Weathering the volatility of early stage exploration. A fireside chat with explorationist Liane Boyer

Liane is the President and Chief Geoscientist of Broken Rock Resources Ltd.  A private exploration company focused on exploration and discovery in North Western Ontario. Broken Rock holds more than a dozen early stage exploration properties with a portfolio containing Diamond, Au, Ag, Cu, Zn, Ni and PGE projects. In August of 2020 Broken Rock optioned the Wishbone and Awkward properties to Panther Mining PLC and together they staked an additional 1,128 claims to cover more than 90% of the Obonga Greenstone Belt. In the fall of 2020 the first two holes into the Wishbone target returned intersections of greater that 20m of coarse massive sulphide breccia.

    Liane has more than 20 years of mining and exploration industry experience ranging from early stage targeting through to resource estimation on projects in Canada and Internationally. As well as being the president of Broken Rock Liane works as a consultant to the mining industry and teaches geologic modeling and resource estimation courses using Leapfrog and Edge software. Liane holds an undergraduate degree in Geological Engineering from Queen’s University and a Masters Degree in Geology from UBC. Liane is a registered Professional Geoscientist in Ontario.

Vice President of Business Development, Novamera

Sustainable Mining by Drilling Technology

Shannon has over 20 years of mining and exploration industry experience. Recent roles include Director of Global Exploration and Growth for Barrick Gold. Shannon has worked in Manitoba and nearly every other province and territory. Shannon is currently the Vice President of Business Development for Novamera, a company looking at innovative ways to precision mine narrow veins using an approach called “Sustainable Mining by Drilling”. Shannon holds a H.B.Sc. in Geology and is a registered Professional Geoscientist in Ontario.

Provincial Geologist and Senior Manager, Manitoba Geological Survey

A Sedimentary Geologist’s Journey from Petroleum to Critical Minerals

Michelle is currently the Provincial Geologist and Senior Manager with Manitoba Geological Survey. Michelle also formed and chairs the Manitoba Critical Mineral Team for the provincial and federal governments. Michelle’s expertise are in petroleum and pore space geology and stratigraphy of Manitoba’s two Phanerozoic sedimentary basins. Michelle received her B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of Manitoba and is a registered Professional Geoscientist with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba, and a Fellow of Geoscientists Canada.

Julie Selway, PhD, P.Geo

VP Exploration, Power Metals Corp. and Principal Geologist, J-J Minerals

Paterson Lake Li-Cs-Ta Property, Separation Rapids, Greenstone Belt, Kenora

Julie’s PhD thesis “Tourmaline in Granitic Pegmatites”, was completed in 1999.  Julie then worked for Ontario Geological Survey during the tantalum boom in the early 2000s.  Dr. Selway is currently the VP of Exploration for Power Metals Corp. supervising three LCT pegmatite properties and is also the Principal Geologist for J-J Minerals.

The Essential Art of Prospecting for Mineral Exploration

Jessica has been a full time prospector since 2000, learning the skills from her father Karl.  Jessica gained further knowledge through short courses, experience and learning from colleagues.  Jessica spent six years on the Board of Directors for the Northwestern Ontario Prospector’s Association.  Jessica taught “Introduction to Hard Rock Prospecting” in the Northwest Territories since 2014.

Irene is experienced in environmental impact assessment and permitting and community engagement for mining and other projects. Irene is a registered Engineer in Training with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba.

Generating Revenue in a Professional Services Firm

Les Johnson is a graduate of the London School of Economics and Brandon College, and has also completed studies at University of Oslo, University of Delhi and Carlton University. His strategic management and economics professional practices span more than four decades. He is currently the Managing Director of Rankin Seabourne Company Inc. In 2020, he was appointed Honorary Advisor to the Mona School of Business and Management, University of the West Indies.His international experience is extensive, having worked in 56 countries in all major economies of the world, encompassing many cultures. His management consulting teams have always been a balance in terms of gender, language, and respect for the economic and social circumstances of colleagues and clients alike.

Ms. Ramnath is a Professional Geoscientist and Entrepreneur with over 20 years of global experience and has worked in various technical and leadership roles including, FNX Mining where she was a key member of the exploration and resource team that discovered the Victoria and Morrison Deposits and subsequently with Bridgeport Ventures, a publicly listed company, where she was the President and CEO.  Ms. Ramnath received a B.Sc. in Geology from the University of Manitoba, a M.Sc. in Exploration Geology from Rhodes University (South Africa), and an Executive MBA from Athabasca University.

Stefanie earned a Ph.D. with distinction in Geology from Memorial University after completing her Diploma in Geology and Paleontology at the University of Mainz in Germany. She is a recent addition to the University of Manitoba Department of Geological Sciences with research interests in genesis and tectonic settings of hydrothermal ore deposits.
